Nash Candelaria, author of four novels and two short story collections so far, has been called the “historical novelist of the Hispanic people of New Mexico”, who “has brought a special perspective to Chicano literature,” and imported “the narrative of self-identity” into it. Ever since the publication of Memories of the Alhambra (1977), the first volume of his Rafa family quartet, critics have attempted to classify him within their closed ideological systems stressing some components while ignoring others.
