One of the most original and versatile Italian artists of the second half of the nineteenth century, Arrigo Boito was a prominent figure within the artistic and intellectual scene of post-unification Italy. He had remarkable achievements in various artistic realms, aiming, like Giuseppe Rovani, to transfer his inspiration from one medium to another:“tutto inteso a realizzare in poesia le condizioni della musica” (“deeply concerned to achieve music’s paradigms in poetry”), to echo Piero Nardi, author of the seminal work Vita di Arrigo Boito(p. 291).
