Usually considered by present-day literary critics in the context of late Victorian aestheticist poetics and feminist thinking, the poet, journalist and activist Augusta Webster was born as Julia Augusta Davies at Poole, Dorset, on 30 January 1837, less than five months before the young Victoria ascended the throne. She was the second of the six children of Vice-Admiral George Davies and Julia Hume. Webster’s childhood was spent in various locations along Britain’s coasts, including a period of five years aboard the HMS Griper followed by four years at Banff Castle in Scotland, until the family finally settled in Cambridge in 1851, when Davies became Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire.
