From the vantage point of the new millennium and with twenty years' worth of hindsight, it is possible to state that after 1980 – the date of the country's independence – three things changed irrevocably in the field of activity and study we now call the Zimbabwean fiction. Firstly, various permutations of a combined reference to the author's race and the language used (white/English, black/vernacular, black/English) became useless as a source of information about the kind of novel that author is likely to have produced.
