Henry Vaughan was born at Newton in the beautiful valley of the Usk, not far from Brecon. It was a landscape of hills and running water, of showers and sunshine, that was to shape and inform much of his work as a writer. Henry was one of twins, and many aspects of his life and thought were closely intertwined with those of his brother Thomas. The boys were grandsons of William Vaughan of Tretower, the Vaughans being an ancient and distinguished family which traced its ancestry back to Agincourt and beyond and which had family connections with the Herberts. The coat of arms which appears on the poet's tomb (in the churchyard of Llansantfraed, not far from the place of his birth) memorialises such family affinities. However indirectly, …
