Hone Tuwhare (1922-2008), or, to give him his full name, Hone Peneamine Anatipa Te Pona Tuwhare, has been New Zealand’s first major Māori poet writing in English. As such he was at the forefront of the Māori Literary Renaissance and, although other such poets have since emerged, he has retained a distinguished and prominent status due to the quality, quantity, and versatility of his oeuvre. Among other awards he received, in the last decade of his life, he twice won the Montana New Zealand Book Award for poetry, for Shape-Shifter and piggy-back moon.
