It is a familiar story: the revolutionary figures of early twentieth-century modernism, whose works aroused great fury at their first appearance, are now accepted as part of the standard repertory. This is especially true in the visual arts: it is difficult today to imagine that the works of Picasso or the Expressionists were once the focus of great turmoil.
