Edward Bouverie Pusey, the youngest son of Philip and Lucy Pusey, was born at Pusey, Berkshire, on 22 August 1800. After preparatory school, he went to Eton in 1812, where Dr. Edward Maltby, the future bishop of Durham, was one of his tutors. He matriculated at Oxford as a member of Christ Church in 1819. He graduated B. A. in 1822 and M. A. in 1825. In 1823 he gained a fellowship at Oriel, and at Oriel, he made friends with John Keble and John Henry Newman.
