Luigi Pulci was born in Florence on August 15, 1432, into an old, aristocratic family (recorded in the city from the twelfth century) facing severe financial challenges at the time. Economic constraints troubled Luigi throughout his life: in 1465-66, his brother Bernardo’s bankruptcy forced him out of the city, where he was readmitted only upon Lorenzo il Magnifico’s own request; growing difficulties obliged him to accept several diplomatic missions at the service of the military captain Roberto da Sanseverino, count of Caiazzo (Naples in 1471; Foligno, Camerino and Rome in 1472, with Clarice Orsini, Lorenzo’s wife; Milan in 1473; Pisa and Bologna, 1474; and Venice, 1484, during the course of which he died in Padua, on November 11)…
