Orlando Patterson was born on June 5, 1940, on the Caribbean island of Jamaica. As a child and young man he would be witness to the transformative political changes and quest for decolonization sweeping through the Anglophone Caribbean. While Jamaica achieved independence from Great Britain in 1962, conditions of economic insecurity, political isolation, and social disorder would impede its development. Similar to other contemporary scholars from the English Caribbean, such as historian Hilary Beckles of Barbados and late cultural theorist Stuart Hall of Jamaica, the legacy of damage inflicted by the European sponsored trans-Atlantic trade in Africans and the institution of plantation slavery would convince Patterson that past …
