Although active in television drama from the late 1950s, it was not until 1967, and the staging of his play A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, that Peter Nichols came to prominence in the theatre. Throughout the 1970s, a steady succession of Nichols’s plays were staged in both the commercial and subsidized theatres in Britain, many of which subsequently transferred to Broadway and were adapted for the cinema.
