Josephine Miles, poet, scholar, and teacher, was born June 11, 1911 in Chicago, and died May 12, 1985 in Berkeley, California. She grew up for the most part in Southern California, and spent her professional life in Berkeley where she taught at the University of California from 1940 until 1978. Miles engaged the full breadth and variety of poetry emerging in those decades and remained collegial with poets representing every active interest and movement in North American poetry. Her poetry was never closely identified with any particular poetry movement, however.
