Justin McCarthy was born in Cork in 1830; he attended a private school in that town, and then began work at the Cork Examiner; however, it was on arrival in England in 1854 that his literary career began. By 1864 he was the editor of the Morning Star and a friend of the likes of John Bright and John Stuart Mill. After a brief journalistic career in the USA, he returned to England, where he became a regular contributor to most of the leading journals of the time and leader-writer for the Daily News. He had moderate success as a novelist; although fairly well-regarded at the time, even his better novels such as Dear Lady Disdain (1875) and Miss Misanthrope (1878) today only retain interest as curiosities.…
