[Preliminary entry] Born Salvatore Lombino on October 25 1926 to second-generation Italian immigrants in East Harlem, Salvatore Lombino would become world-famous as “Ed McBain”, the inventor of police procedural novels. His father a postman, Lombino was brought up in the Bronx, the setting of many of his 87^th Precinct novels. His artistic talents led him to study at Cooper Union Art School, but at age 18 he joined the US Navy, serving until 1946 and writing his first novel whilst serving on a destroyer in the Pacific. On his return he majored in English at Hunter College, began publishing under the pen name “Evan Hunter”, and supported himself by teaching English in underprivileged schools in New York.
