Janice Kulyk Keefer was born as Janice Kulyk in Toronto, Canada. She is the author of over a dozen works of poetry, prose, and literary criticism. Among her awards are the first prize in the CBC radio literary competition and the National Magazine Award, the 13^th Marian Engel Award, and a SSHRCC artist/researcher fellowship. Under Eastern Eyes (1987), her study of Canadian fiction from the Maritimes, and her novel The Green Library (1996) were both shortlisted for a Governor General’s award. Her collection of poetry Marrying the Sea (1998) won the Canadian Authors’ Award, and her most recent novel, The Ladies Lending Library (2007), won the Kobzar prize.
