Although Fanny Kemble was already well-known as an actress on the London stage as well as from her tours through the United States of America, her main claim to literary fame lies in the publication of her most popular work, Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839 (written in 1838-1839; first published in 1863). Kemble also published several other journals and memoirs capturing her life and experiences as an actress, a novel and a book on Shakespeare’s plays, but none of her other works matched the popularity of Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839, especially in the United States.
