When one ponders the history of evil, Adolf Hitler’s name comes to mind most often. There has been no end of efforts to explain him, especially his hate for the Jews and the Holocaust it unleashed. More book titles are alleged to contain his name than any other. After he came to power in Germany in January 1933, he established a terrorist police state that has become a prototype for the controversial concept of “totalitarian state”. In 1938 he began a series of aggressive expansions that led to World War II. Thereafter in his effort to remake the ethnic map of Europe, his minions murdered perhaps seventeen million civilians, including POWs, with an ultimate target of well over forty million.
