Robert Hass was born in 1942 in Northern California where he attended Saint Mary's College in Oakland and Stanford University. After teaching at the State University of New York at Buffalo, he returned to teach at Saint Mary's and to live in Berkeley, where he is now on the faculty of the University of California. With his first wife, his childhood sweetheart Earlene, he had two sons and a daughter.
Hass thinks of himself as a California poet, in a line that descends from Robinson Jeffers and Kenneth Rexroth, rather than as a San Francisco poet in the orbit of the Beats; and his aptly titled first volume, Field Guide, published in 1973 in the Yale Series of Younger Poets, uses the coastal mountain landscape of the Bay …
