Algirdas Julius Greimas was born in Tula (Russia) on March 9, 1917. His parents were Lithuanian, and returned to their home country after Lithuania declared its independence in 1918. Greimas completed his secondary schooling at the Rygiškių Jonas High School in Marijampole and graduated in 1934. He then studied law at Kaun’s Vytautas Magnus University and obtained a grant from the Lithuanian Ministry of Education to study in France. There, he obtained a degree in letters, after studying language and dialectology in Grenoble, a period during which he also became interested in the Middle Ages.
