Edmond and Jules de Goncourt were not only writers who initiated the Naturalist movement in nineteenth-century France, but also historians, painters and collectors who dedicated their lives to Art. Their Journal de la vie littéraire [Journal of Literary Life] (1851-1896), considered to be their major creation, gives one of the most comprehensive overviews of cultural life in France during the second half of the century.
