Samuel Rawson Gardiner was born in 1829 in Ropley, Hampshire, to Scottish parents. His family were early adherents to the Irvingite, or Catholic Apostolic, Church and during his youth they moved to London to be at the centre of that church's activities. They settled in Gordon Street, close to the Gordon Square Central Church, but also within a short walk of the British Library at which Gardiner began his historical studies. He had been schooled at Winchester College and Christ Church, Oxford; unfortunately, he was unable to carry on to his MA after obtaining a first-class degree in 1851 due to his decision to be ordained a deacon at Gordon Square.
