The son of Francesco Ippolito and Adele Lehr, Carlo Emilio Gadda was born in the city of Milan in 1893 to a family that enjoyed some degree of prestige and affluence. Among Carlo Emilio’s ancestors were aristocrats, such as Paola Ripamonti, and prominent politicians, like Giuseppe Gadda who had served as a minister of Public Works in the Lanza-Sella cabinet from 1869 to 1873. Carlo Emilio’s father worked in the textile industry and had been a partner of the mill “Ronchetti & C”. In 1899, Francesco decided to build a summer villa in Longone al Segrino, in the Brianza region. This decision would prove to be an ill-fated one, affecting Carlo Emilio for years to come.
