Ian Lancaster Fleming (1908-1964) is an author best known as the creator of the James Bond secret agent novels and the children’s book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He was born on 28th May 1908, the second of four sons in the marriage of Valentine and Evelyn Rose Fleming, and his middle name was chosen by his mother, who was known for her ‘petty snobbery’ (Lycett 2) and claimed descent from the Duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt. Eve Fleming was the fashionable daughter of a London solicitor and her grandfather, Disraeli’s solicitor, had founded the Norton Rose law firm, now a global company.
