Timothy Irving Frederick Findley (known to family and friends as Tiff) was born in 1930 in Toronto. Alan and Margaret Findley and their two sons, Michael and Timothy, lived a life of wealth and privilege in the upscale Toronto neighborhood of Rosedale, until the Great Depression made it necessary for them to move. Timothy was often sick as a child and remembers spending much time lying in bed, reading, dreaming, and listening to radio plays. Raised largely by maids, Findley recalls feeling a shock of recognition upon seeing Carson McCullers' play Member of the Wedding, in which a lonely young girl confides in her family's maid.
