We have often realized that our understanding of pre-modern literature is still rather limited. Many poets and works which apparently exerted a huge influence remain mostly unknown to us, either because we have lost the manuscript copies or because modern scholarship has not yet paid enough attention to them. Without solid critical editions, and by now also without good translations into a modern vernacular, some of the true literary giants from the past continue to be mostly obscured. This has also been the case with the famous Dominican preacher-author Thomas de Cantimpré, but very recent efforts have finally filled the gap between his major contributions and us today.
