Charles-Irénée Castel, abbé de Saint-Pierre was born in Saint-Pierre-Église, on 13 February 1658, and died in Paris on 29 April 1743. Until recently, his name has been associated with the vast and multifaceted European tradition of utopian thought on account of the presumed impracticability of his numerous projects and designs. His Projet pour rendre la paix perpétuelle en Europe (1713-1717), a pacifist plan for a European federation, has, most notably, sustained criticism since its first publication.
