The identity of Kurban Said, the author of two novels published in the 1930s, remained mysterious for decades. The more famous of these two books, Ali und Nino [Ali and Nino] was published in Vienna in 1937, but fell until obscurity until it was translated into English in 1970, and has since then become a classic account of life in Azerbaijan just before and after the Russian Revolution, translated into nearly 40 languages.
