Syed Shamsul Haq (1935-2016), popularly known as a sabyasachi [literally, ambidextrous; able to write in different genres] writer, was one of the most prolific and versatile writers of Bangladesh - he wrote in almost all major genres. He was born on 27 December 1935 in Kurigram, in present-day Rangpur division of northern Bangladesh. He was the eldest of eight children of Syed Siddique Husain, a homeopath. Haq’s mother Halima Khatun was a housewife. Even though theirs was a peer (Islamic saint) family belonging to Muslim aristocracy, Haq’s father parted with family traditions and pursued English education.
