The Cape Verdean poet, writer and journalist Arménio Adroaldo Vieira e Silva was born in the city of Praia, Santiago Island, in 1941. Political and intellectual activity against the Salazar regime led to his persecution by the International and State Defense Police (PIDE) and his subsequent imprisonment in Praia and, later, Penamacor. During military service he was mobilized to serve in Angola for three years. He eventually returned to Cape Verde in 1967.
