Olindo Guerrini’s admirable erudition, as well as his love of Italian language, literature, and food, took him on circuitous and fascinating paths all along the Italian peninsula. Atop his trusty bicycle, seen in so many photographs and in caricature representations, Guerrini travelled in order to learn about Italy and to write about his discoveries. His was not the stuff of travelogue, however; instead, he used poetry, letters, and even a cookbook to portray the zeitgeist of contemporary Italy. His hefty sense of humour led at times to satire, but his observations of Italy and its mores, habits, and peccadillos came through criticism of a gentle variety.
