Giovanni (Battista) Zuccala (Locatelli) was born in December of 1788, just a few months before the outbreak of the French Revolution in May of the following year. Son of landowner Carlo Ambrogio, of the historical Lombard-Venetian Zuccala Locatelli family (occasionally also recorded as Zuccala De’ Locatelli and Zuccala Locatelli Del Bona), and Elena Fracasso, Zuccala holds a somewhat tangential yet unique position in the Italian cultural and literary landscape. To begin with, it is important to ‘disambiguate’ the Bergamasco-born intellectual from his homonymous uncle (1754 –1825), the clergyman and historian whose Memorie Storiche di Bergamo [Chronicles of Bergamo] (1813, now 2002) would inspire …
