Clementina Maria Black (1853-1922), writer, political activist, trade unionist, and social reformer, was born on July 27^th, 1853 in Brighton, East Sussex. She was the first daughter of eight children to David Black (1817–1892) and Clara Maria Patten (1825–1875).

While David earned his living as a solicitor, town clerk, and coroner in Brighton, Clara, daughter of George Patten (1801–1865), portrait painter in ordinary for Prince Albert (1819-1861), educated her daughters at their home on Ship Street, in the same house where Clementina was born (Graves and Morales).
