Abdulai Sila was born in Catió, southern Guinea-Bissau, on April 1st, 1958. After the proclamation of independence on September 24th, 1973, he participated in the ‘literacy brigades’ under the guidance of the Brazilian pedagogue Paulo Freire. In 1985, he graduated in Electrical Engineering at the University of Dresden (Germany, where he lived for six years and devoted himself to the study of information and communication technologies, becoming a businessman in this area). According to the Guinean literature professor Moema Parente Augel:
