Stefano Fioroni is one of the most important authors of the epic maggio, a traditional form of theater originating in Tuscany and the Emilia-Romagna region and whose earliest extant written sources date back to the late eighteenth century. Actors, called maggiarini, are nonprofessional and belong to theatrical companies named compagnie or complessi maggistici. The dramatic themes are usually inspired by medieval and Renaissance chivalric romances, in particular those maggi composed up until the early 1900s, which were mostly influenced by the works of Andrea da Barberino, Matteo Maria Boiardo, Ludovico Ariosto, and Torquato Tasso.
