Better known as Noémia de Sousa, Noémia Carolina Abranches de Sousa Soares was born in Katembe, Moçambique, on the 20th of September of 1926. She was a prominent Mozambican woman writer and translator, usually known as “the mother of the Mozambican poets”. She published her poetry in local newspapers such as O Brado Africano [The African Shout], Itinerário [Itinerary], Notícias do Bloqueio [The Block News] Mensagem [Message] and Mshao. She was involved, once exiled in Lisbon, in the activities of Casa dos Estudantes do Império and of the Centre for African Studies, two well-known anti-colonial cultural associations. Sousa was …
