Heliodoro Baptista was born on 19 May 1944 in Gonhane (Inhassunge), Quelimane, capital of the province of Zambezia in Mozambique. He was the son of a European father and mother of European and African descent. He died on 1 May 2009 in Beira, where he lived for more than 50 years. He was married to the well-known photojournalist of the daily Diário de Moçambique, Celeste Mac-Artur. He was a member of AEMO Associação dos Escritores Moçambicanos (Mozambican writers association).

From the age of 4 to 14 years he lived in Portugal, successively, in Póvoa de Varzim and Mealhada. He started his journalistic activity in the 1970’s writing for the newspaper Notícias …
