José Luandino Vieira (born José Vieira Mateus da Graça, 1935 -) is an Angolan writer and one of the founders of the União dos Escritores Angolanos [Angolan Writers Union, UEA]. His novels and short stories, mostly written while he was a political prisoner during Angola’s liberation war, are considered foundational works of Angolan literature. Deeply connected to the context of the struggle against colonialism and the birth of Angola as a nation, his literature is a quest for Angolanidade, for a distinctive Angolan identity.
