Andrea Francesco Alberto de Chirico, who adopted the pseudonym of Alberto Savinio, an Italianization of the name of the French polymath and translator Albert Savine, is one of the most prolific Italian authors of the twentieth century. André Breton placed him among the initiators of French Surrealism, along with his brother, the painter Giorgio de Chirico, in the Antologie de l’humour noir [Anthology of Black Humor] (1940).
