Mario Paolo Mieli was an Italian activist, theorist, writer, and performer. A major figure of the Italian sexual liberation movement of the 1970s, Mieli cofounded the Italian Revolutionary Homosexual Liberation Front, “F.U.O.R.I!” [Fronte Unitario Omosessuale Rivoluzionario Italiano], and wrote Elementi di critica omosessuale [Elements of Gay Critique], which is considered to be the most significant work of critical theory on sexuality in the Italian cultural context. Mieli’s work, art, and activism attack institutionalized heterosexuality and point to it as a problem not only for homosexuals, but for people of all genders and sexual orientations.
