Poet, novelist, and literary critic Tabish Khair is the author of six collections of poems, seven novels, and several books of literary criticism. He was born in 1966 in Ranchi (then the summer capital of Bihar, now the capital of Jharkhand) and grew up in his hometown, Gaya. His father was a doctor and Tabish was expected to study medicine, but he obtained his BA with History, Sociology, and English from the local Gaya College, and an MA in English from Magadh University (Bodh Gaya). While a college student he also worked as the district reporter for the Patna edition of the Times of India.
