José Agustín is a prolific Mexican writer who shot to fame in the 1960s through his association with the countercultural movement known as La Onda (The Wave). Onda writing is concerned with youth rebellion, rock music and drugs. These topics are explored through the use of innovative and non-standard language, such as erratic syntax, urban slang and neologisms, often based on foreign languages, particularly English and French. Youth culture, the search for a personal identity in dissolute urban environments and gender relations are recurring topics in Agustín’s literary trajectory.
