Pernette Du Guillet (ca. 1520—17 July 1545) was a French poet active in Lyons in the 1540s. Her collection of love poems, Rymes de gentile, et vertueuse dame D. Pernette Du Guillet, Lyonnoise was published posthumously by the Lyonnais printer Jean de Tournes in 1545, its title was most likely chosen by the editors to convey the Petrarchan character of Pernette’s poetry. Apart from Petrarch, Du Guillet was greatly influenced by the courtly tradition, Neoplatonism, and the poetry of Clément Marot and Maurice Scève. The first edition of Rymes includes seventy poems by Du Guillet and is accompanied by Antoine Du Moulin’s preface “Aux dames lyonnaises”, a liminary poem by …
