Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany, and raised mainly in Munich by modernising reformed Jewish parents. Germany was a burgeoning military power with expansionist and imperial aspirations. Its chemical and electrical industries, and its technical education, were already setting the standard for the rest of the world. Einstein’s father was an electrical engineer whose businesses made dynamos and generators, but they often failed in financial terms. His mother was the daughter of a provision merchant. Einstein was a shy child interested in music and literature and especially mathematics.
