Little is known about the life of Artemidorus, save that he is said to be a native of Daldis in Lydia, as mentioned in the Suda (a tenth-century Byzantine lexicon). However, the entry also purports that the same Artemidorus wrote a work on palmistry, which is perhaps doubtful (White, 1975, p. 7). From the dedications in his five books of Oneirocritica, a study of dream interpretation, we can ascertain that Artemidorus lived in the second century AD, a time in which the Hellenic world was reinvigorated under the Roman Empire, particularly under the emperor Hadrian.
