Carlos Monsiváis Aceves (1938-2010) was one of Mexico’s foremost writers and public intellectuals. Born on May 4, 1938 to a Protestant family in Mexico City, Monsiváis cultivated a love of reading and writing from an early age. By the time Monsiváis had finished elementary school, he had read the Bible and many classic works of literature. His narrative capacity and incisive talent for literary and cultural analysis as well as social commentary was such that, by age 28, he had already agreed to an autobiography (see the edition by Emmanuel Carballo, 1966).
