George Y. Shevelov (Hryhorii Shevchuk, H. Shevchuk, Hr. Sh., Yury Šerech, Jury Šerech, Sherekh, Iur. Sher., Iu. Sh., and other pseudonyms) (1908–2002), an eminent Slavist, literary critic, and essayist, was one of the most influential Ukrainian intellectuals of the second half of the twentieth century. Shevelov made his most significant contributions in the field of Slavic linguistics, with a particular focus on the history of Ukrainian. He authored works on such topics as the history of East Slavic; the historical phonology of Common Slavic and Ukrainian; the morphology, syntax, and lexicology of Ukrainian and other Slavic languages, approached both synchronically and diachronically; as well as studies in …
