Regina Salomea Pilsztynowa, née Rusiecka (or Makowska, as she signs her name on the title page of her autobiography and in the introductory letter to her benefactress, Ludwika Potocka née Mniszech), was Poland's first female “Medical Doctor and Oculist”. She was born in 1718, in the province of Nowogródek (today's Belarus). At the age of fourteen, her burgher parents married her off to Jacob Halpir, an ophthalmologist, with whom she soon moved to Istanbul where he treated patients. It is there that she learned some of his doctoring methods, which she was to use for the remainder of her life.
