Sebastiano Vassalli was born in Genoa in 1941 to a Tuscan mother and a Lombardan father. In his early childhood, his parents abandoned him to be brought up by relatives in Novara, where Vassalli lived as a young man in the city or latterly in a farmhouse in the midst of the ricefields of the Po valley. He attended the faculty of Lettere at the University of Milan, graduating with a thesis on contemporary art and psychology. Survived by his second wife and estranged adopted son from his first marriage, he died on July 26, 2015, in a hospice in a small town outside Novara after a short illness.
