Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian-French graphic novelist, visual artist, and filmmaker. She is best known for her graphic memoir Persepolis, originally published in four volumes by the French publisher L’Association between 2000 and 2003. She has also authored other graphic novels and illustrated children’s books. In recent years, she has become equally well-known for her work as a filmmaker and director, starting with the film version of Persepolis (released in 2007 and co-created with Vincent Paronnaud). She is a well-known dissident figure in the Iranian diaspora, speaking out on political topics from Jacques Chirac’s headscarf ban in 2004 to the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmedinejad in Iran in 2009.
