The playwright and visual artist Stanisław Wyspiański (1869–1907) made an unparalleled impact on modern Polish-language drama and theatre. Although his life was deeply affected by terminal illness, his nevertheless prolific work—as a dramatist, designer, director, and painter—epitomized the fin de siècle Young Poland movement. It would also come to symbolize his home city of Krakow, which, together with Lviv, served as the cultural seat of Austrian Galicia during his lifetime. Ultimately, Wyspiański’s legacy has inspired generations of artists in Poland, where he remains a major influence on the arts and culture to this day.
